Most added comments like, “You’re so adorable!” to their photo requests. Which, really, says it all and explains why so many people were stopping to photograph Nora in her foam Pop Tart body with a trail of rainbow fabric spread across seven or eight feet of the floor. What exactly is Nyan Cat? Let’s let Nora’s mom Jeanna Crawford explain: “It’s a cat with a Pop Tart body who poops rainbows in space.” And then there was 9-year-old Nora Crawford who wanted to come to Comic-Con as Nyan Cat, one of the biggest Internet meme characters of 2011. An infant in a bat costume, riding on his or her dad’s shoulders. A four-year-old girl in a Supergirl costume. We saw a whole bunch of cute little ones. Of course, there are kids in costume here, too. “Through space, not really in water yet,” he replied. So… do you surf in water, too, we asked him. “He flies through space on a surfboard, he’s awesome!” Michael said when we asked why he’d chosen that comic book character. Michael Park, an 18-year-old from Houston came as the Silver Surfer, a costume that required two hours to shave his body, three hours to paint his body and a whole lot of nerve to walk around in metallic silver booty shorts. One of the things we heard over and over at Comic-Con on Thursday was how much work went into making their elaborate costumes. That prompted the natural question: Favorite ponies? “The characters are so great, that’s what I like,” Casey said. “It’s a show that pulled us in and we stayed for the fan art and fiction,” Joseph said. We are bronies, the 19-year-old community college students told us, and then they explained a little bit of why. They both wore My Little Pony T-shirts and Joseph added a paper My Little Pony crown, a giveaway at the booth, so we had to ask: Are you guys bronies, the name given the very large contingent of My Little Pony fans who are grown-up guys? Casey Stevens and Joseph Houser paused in the My Little Pony area of the Hasbro booth to admire some of the many ponies on display.
